Kovar (UNS K94610, ASTM F15) is a nickel-iron-cobalt alloy that typically contains around 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, and the rest iron, along with trace amounts of manganese (≤0.5%), silicon (≤0.2%), and carbon (≤0.04%) to ensure purity and performance. Mechanically, Kovar shows moderate to high tensile strength (about 500-520 MPa in annealed sheet/plate form), a yield strength of around 340-350 MPa, elongation of approximately 30-45%, and a hardness level (soft/annealed) that is suitable for forming (around Rockwell B 60-70). Its coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) closely aligns with that of borosilicate glass and alumina ceramics, roughly 5 x 10^-6/°C between 20-200°C, gradually increasing at higher temperatures.
